Choosing a ride

King County Access or a Private Wheelchair Van? A Practical Comparison

Choose around the actual trip: eligibility, route, timing, assistance, and cost. Public paratransit and private transportation have different booking processes.

Finding an accessible vehicle is one part of choosing a ride. The next question is whether the service fits the trip you want to take—and whether you have completed the steps needed to use it.

For a Seattle-area wheelchair user, King County Metro Access and a private transportation provider may both be worth investigating. They are not interchangeable reservations. Compare the real journey instead of deciding from a service name alone.

Who can use King County Access?

King County Metro describes Access as transportation for people whose disabilities prevent them from using regular buses and trains for some or all trips. The program has an application and eligibility process. Using a wheelchair, by itself, is not a completed eligibility determination.

If you have not applied, start with Metro’s current instructions. Do not rely on Access for a near-term trip until you know your eligibility and booking arrangements. Ask the program directly about visitor access or coordination with another region’s paratransit service if those apply.

Does the service cover this route at this time?

Metro says Access generally serves locations within three-quarter miles of regular Metro bus routes or Link stations while the corresponding services operate. Check the current Access service map and instructions for both ends of the proposed trip.

For a private provider, ask whether it can accept the specific pickup, destination, and date. A city on a service-area page is a starting point for a request; it is not a guarantee that a vehicle is available at every hour.

Compare these five answers

  • Booking: What is required before I can request the ride, and when is it considered confirmed?
  • Timing: What pickup window and arrival arrangement should I expect?
  • Journey: Could other pickups or stops be included, and how is the return planned?
  • Assistance: Where will help begin and end, and can a companion travel?
  • Cost: What will I pay, and what changes could affect that amount?

Ask each service these questions in its own terms. Do not assume every private trip is exclusive, every provider offers the same assistance, or a particular appointment time guarantees an exact pickup minute.

Match the choice to the day

Consider two hypothetical trips. One is a flexible visit with a friend where the rider is already approved for Access and has confirmed that the route works. The other is a first-time hospital departure with a receiving caregiver, equipment, and an uncertain readiness time.

The second trip may require more handoff coordination, regardless of which provider is used. The comparison should focus on whether the proposed service can meet those needs—not on a blanket claim that one category is always better.

Keep transportation benefits in their own lane

Metro Access and Apple Health transportation are different programs. If you are exploring help for a covered health care appointment, start with our Apple Health transportation guide and the linked state resources. Do not assume enrollment or approval in one program confirms a booking in the other.

Confirm the final plan with the actual operator

Save the booking confirmation, pickup instructions, contact number, and return arrangement. Check current fares and policies directly with Metro or the private provider when reserving; prices and service rules can change.

A useful choice is specific: this rider, this route, this day, this assistance plan. Once those details are confirmed, the comparison becomes much clearer.
